The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
