Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
