The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
