British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
